An Iron Bar is a Common item that is used in Crafting, Augmenting, and Researching.
Acquisition
Iron Bars are tradeable at the Marketplace or they can be created using the Smithing skill. Smelting an Iron Bar yields 45 experience and requires a base amount of 3 Iron Ores and an expenditure of 5 Heat. A minimum skill level of Smithing 10 is required at the City Forge, however higher levels are needed to access the Dwarven or Volcanic Forges.
Harvesting a 
Mysterious Seed will sometimes yield this material and occasionally Iron Bars may be earned in combat:

Augmenting and Researching
Augmenting and Researching items cost the same resources—the following items require Iron Bars. Note that if you augment an item beyond +5, augmenting will also require base copies of the item. On a failed Research action, your item will break and turn into scrap.
