Runecrafting lets you create Runes from Rune slates (acquired through Mining) and Essences. These Runes are required for Enchanting.
Essence
To start you'll need to gather essence. Essence can be gathered by doing various activities.
Every 20 levels you craft one more rune each time you craft one, so at level 20 you'd craft 2 runes and at level 40 you craft 3.
Each rune gives the same experience (25 xp) in runecrafting per craft.

Talisman
If you have an talisman for the essence you're gathering you will gather it 5x faster.
You can find talismans in rare drops from Gathering skills; Geodes, Birds nests and Sunken Treasures are obtained through Mining, Woodcutting and Fishing respectively.
