Fishing UI

Fishing is a gathering skill that allows players to catch raw fish. These fish can then be cooked using the cooking skill.

General

Four areas are available for aspiring fishers, each offering different fish to be caught. The time required per fishing action is always exactly 10 seconds. Each action, the player has a certain chance of successfully catching one of the fishes available at that location. This chance will start at 20% and gradually increase with increasing level, up to a maximum of 100%. Although the theoretical maximum chance in the last area is 81.3%, this can be boosted to 100% using enchantment scrolls.

The caught fish can be cooked to offer hitpoint replenishment while fighting and various buffs for out of combat actions. See cooking for more information.

Players have a small chance of obtaining sunken treasures. These can be opened for gold and sometimes gems. More importantly, these treasures have a small chance of dropping talismans used in runecrafting, and an even smaller chance of dropping a forgotten soul.

Equipment

Several items are necessary to be able to fish at all areas.

Item Use Method of obtaining
Fishing net Needed to be able to fish the first area Crafting (level 1, 150 branches)
Fly fishing rod Needed to be able to fish the second area Crafting (level 15, 200 branches and 100 logs)
Feather Costs one per action in the second area Bought from the game shop for 10 gold each
Cage Needed to be able to fish the third area Crafting (level 25, 100 iron bars and 200 oak logs)
Harpoon Needed to be able to fish the fourth area Crafting (level 40, 100 iron bars and 200 willow logs)

Areas

The xp per hour figures are without any boosts, using only the base equipments needed to be able to fish.

Area Level Item(s) needed Fish (level) Xp/hour (level 50) Xp/hour (level 80) Xp/hour (level 99)
Net fishing 1 Fishing net Shrimp (1), Anchovy (15) 4,388 5,400 5,400
Fly fishing 20 Fly fishing rod and feathers Trout (20), Salmon (35) 12,161 21,375 22,500
Cage fishing 40 Cage Lobster (40) 11,700 25,200 33,750
Harpoon fishing 50 Harpoon Tuna (50), Shark (70) 9,000 27,428 40,146

Boosts

Several boosts can be applied to increase the fish gained and/or the experience received:

The theoretical maximum xp rate per hour is 143,029, although no fish is obtained this way:

The theoretical maximum amount of sharks per hour is 371, for 65,013 xp per hour:

Chances

The fishing skill is dependent on two chance-based factors: whether or not a catch succeeds, and what fish is caught when it does.

Catch success chance

The base success chance for each area is 20%. For every level gained above the minimum level requirement of an area, the success chance is increased by 1.25%, rounded to one decimal place. The chance can never be higher than 100%.

The two lower areas reach 100% chance by level 99. The cage fishing area caps at 93.8% and the harpoon fishing location at 81.3%.

As of the new Mastery update, it is possible to raise the effective level of the fishing skill past 99, making it possible to get 100% catch rate in later zones without the fishing enchant.

Fish type caught

Some areas contain two different types of fish. Up until the level needed for the higher-tier fish, 100% of the caught fish are of the lower tier. As soon as both fish can be caught, the chance of catching lower tier fish is 80% while the higher tier fish has a 20% chance to be caught. Each level after that increases the chance for the higher tier fish by 1%, up to a maximum of 50%. Because of this, 49% of all fish caught using a harpoon at level 99 will be sharks: 20 + (99 - 70) = 49%.

  • Note - this is old info. As of the Mastery patch, fishing zones no longer have a level requirement for different resources.
