the skill
Four areas are available for aspiring fishers, each offering different fish to be caught. The time required per fishing action is always exactly 10 seconds. Each action, the player has a certain chance of successfully catching one of the fishes available at that location. This chance will start at 20% and gradually increase with increasing level, up to a maximum of 100%. Although the theoretical maximum chance in the last area is 81.3%, this can be boosted to 100% using enchantment scrolls.

Fishing is a gathering skill that allows players to catch raw fish and gather fibers. Fish can be prepared using the Cooking skill, while fibers are used in Cloth Weaving.

The caught fish can be cooked to offer hitpoint replenishment while fighting.
+
General
Alternatively, cooked fish can be eaten to offer an experience boost for a set amount of actions per fish. Note that only one type of fish can be eaten for experience boosts. If you still have boosted actions left from one type of fish, eating another type will replace the existing boost.
+
Fishing was reworked and released in the v0.10.0 update, it received a massive overhaul and was the first gathering skill in Idlescape that used the node system. Gathering with a node system increases the amount of gathering areas without increasing the amount of zones, the player starts fishing in a zone and nodes are found by the player while fishing and are dependent on the effective fishing level and bait power stats, higher numbers in those stats gives increased node find chance and decreased find speed.
 +

 +
The caught fish can be prepared with the Cooking skill to create Filleted Fish and Fish Oil, as well as some essences depending on the fish. These can be used to create food, buff food, or buff potions. There are different recipes that can be used for different benefits, more information can be found on the Cooking page.
 +

 +
Fibers gathered through Fishing are used to weave cloth which can then be used to craft magic equipment for Combat.
 +

 +
Players have a small chance of obtaining either Sunken Treasures or Ancient Treasures. Ancient treasures have a rare chance to drop fishing gear such as Ancient Harpoon, Ancient Fishing Net and Ancient Fishing Rod which are used to craft Idlescape's first legendary tier tool, the Ocean's Embrace. Sunken treasures have a rare chance of dropping Modified Diving Gloves or a Forgotten Soul.

Most areas contain multiple fish with different level requirements. When the level requirement of a certain fish is not met, that fish cannot be caught and only the lower tier fish will be obtained. Players have a small chance of obtaining sunken treasures. These can be opened for gold and sometimes gems. More importantly, these treasures have a small chance of dropping talismans used in runecrafting, and an even smaller chance of dropping a forgotten soul.<br />

Equipment
Equipment
Several items are necessary to be able to fish at all areas.
+
Fishing equipment serves to boost your stats, increasing the chances of succeeding in fishing as well as decreasing the time needed. Wearing the Fisherman's Bucket Hat, Smock, and Waders together provides the player with a 15% stat buff, together with the Ocean's Embrace this rises to a 30% buff.

Bait can be used by clicking on it and moving it into the tacklebox. This is separate from tacklebox equipment and can be used even without one equipped.
The xp per hour figures are without any boosts, using only the base equipments needed to be able to fish.

The Stormy Seas is a dangerous location. While fishing there, a Swordfish, Ascended or Swordfish Champion will occasionally spawn and attack the player. This fight cannot be escaped from, and losing will lock the player out of the location for 15 minutes.

Fibers
Fishing Stats
 +
There are various stats that can be gained through levels and equipment that affect fishing.
 +
 +
Effective Fishing Level
 +
Effective fishing level is the combination of the players fishing and mastery level and the fishing stats on equipment.
 +
It affects various secondary stats:
 +
 +
*Chance of finding and gathering from a node
 +
*Rarity of resources
 +
*Quantity of resources in a node
 +
*Chance to preserve bait
 +
 +
Bait Preservation
 +
Bait preservation comes from both effective fishing level and the enchantment of the same name which comes enchanted by default on the Fisherman's Bucket Hat. It determines the chance that a bait is used on an action and is capped at 50%.
 +
 +
Bait preservation is reduced by Deadliest Catch but cannot go lower than 0%.
 +
 +
Bait Power
 +
Increases the chance and speed of finding nodes, and the size of nodes found. Chance is capped at 100% and speed is capped at 1 second.
 +
 +
Reel Power
 +
Increases the chance and speed of gathering resources. Chance is capped at 100% and speed is capped at 1 second.
 +
 +
Bonus Rarity
 +
Some nodes require a certain bonus rarity to start appearing. Rare resources require a rarity higher than the node.
 +
Nodes and resources have a cap where bonus rarity above will not provide additional drop frequency.

Boosts
+
Bonus Rarity must be above the minimum rarity for resources to appear. Resources not listed here require no bonus rarity to collect.
Several boosts can be applied to increase the fish gained and/or the experience received:

* Scroll of fishing can enchant boots or gloves to increase the chance of catching fish.

* Scroll of haste can enchant rings or necklaces to increase action speed.

* Scroll of gathering can enchant rings or necklaces to give a chance to obtain extra resources.

* Scroll of naturalist can enchant boots or gloves to increase the odds of finding a sunken treasure.

* Scroll of the scholar can enchant rings or necklaces to increase the experienced gained, at the cost of not receiving items.

* Scroll of wealth can enchant rings or necklaces to automatically sell mined resources to the game shop at an increased price.

Skills
Some areas contain two different types of fish. Up until the level needed for the higher-tier fish, 100% of the caught fish are of the lower tier. As soon as both fish can be caught, the chance of catching lower tier fish is 80% while the higher tier fish has a 20% chance to be caught. Each level after that increases the chance for the higher tier fish by 1%, up to a maximum of 50%. Because of this, 49% of all fish caught using a harpoon at level 99 will be sharks: 20 + (99 - 70) = 49%.

Fishing UI

Fishing is a gathering skill that allows players to catch raw fish and gather fibers. Fish can be prepared using the Cooking skill, while fibers are used in Cloth Weaving.

General

Fishing was reworked and released in the v0.10.0 update, it received a massive overhaul and was the first gathering skill in Idlescape that used the node system. Gathering with a node system increases the amount of gathering areas without increasing the amount of zones, the player starts fishing in a zone and nodes are found by the player while fishing and are dependent on the effective fishing level and bait power stats, higher numbers in those stats gives increased node find chance and decreased find speed.

The caught fish can be prepared with the Cooking skill to create Filleted Fish and Fish Oil, as well as some essences depending on the fish. These can be used to create food, buff food, or buff potions. There are different recipes that can be used for different benefits, more information can be found on the Cooking page.

Fibers gathered through Fishing are used to weave cloth which can then be used to craft magic equipment for Combat.

Equipment

Fishing equipment serves to boost your stats, increasing the chances of succeeding in fishing as well as decreasing the time needed. Wearing the Fisherman's Bucket Hat, Smock, and Waders together provides the player with a 15% stat buff, together with the Ocean's Embrace this rises to a 30% buff.

The Stormy Seas is a dangerous location. While fishing there, a Swordfish, Ascended or Swordfish Champion will occasionally spawn and attack the player. This fight cannot be escaped from, and losing will lock the player out of the location for 15 minutes.

Fibers

In addition to the above drops, each area has a chance to yield fibers per Fishing action. Fibers can be processed through Cloth Weaving to produce Cloth, which is used to craft Magic equipment and Skilling equipment. Some fibers require a specific Bonus Rarity threshold to be met before they can be gathered. This stat can be increased by using certain baits and fishing equipment.
